When I was 18 years old, I was in a bad accident with my best friend where her SUV flipped at least 3 times. I struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder as well, and I felt like I was going to die every time I was in a moving vehicle. I had tried everything, but last year (after 12 years of suffering) I finally decided to try cipralex and it REALLY helped (I'm not saying that drugs are THE cure for EVERYBODY, but it helped me tremendously with my post-traumatic stress). I don't get panicky in cars anymore... but I have yet to start driving again. I don't have a car, but when I can afford one I'm going to start driving again little by little, just like you are.
