magazines for dancing inspiration

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Flipping through magazines is a choreographed passion of mine.  I quickly fan through seeking something that will  ignite my next creative idea.

When I saw these images of girls dancing, I cut out their bodies and filled them with ink lines and drawings because I was inspired to capture the energy of the movement.

These magazine cut outs became preliminary sketches for a photoshoot I wanted to do. Originally I wanted to do a dance sequence of myself and then cut out my own body and sketch shapes and patterns to express the energy of the movement.

So I went ahead and planned a shoot with photographer Kevin Thom.  I liked the images we created so much I’ve left them as they are for now. Who knows maybe I will still cut out the body shapes and sketch something in, in the meantime I’m enjoying the energy of the sequence.

Can you feel the energy in this dance sequence? Do you think adding the sketches in the body shape would add another dimension to the images?
I’d love to hear your thoughts! Creativity is becoming a much more collaborative experience these days

Tribal Manifesting Tricks

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

I stumbled upon the Tribal Manifesting Tricks while dancing around my studio one day.  As I danced, I felt my body asking “What is the most powerful next step I can take in my life?”

Then almost magically I had a clear insight pop into my head and I stopped my dance and I ran to find my sketchbook so I could write it down.

When I finished recording the guidance I wondered how I manifested such a speedy and clear response to my request?

Then I remembered all the research I had done on Tribal Art.

Did you know that in ancient tribal cultures their version of art is actually their offerings to spirit. For example, when they wanted rain they would create a mask and a dance that would stir up the energy of rain.  When they wanted healing they would create something as an offering to spirit for their healing. Their art was their way to communicate with spirit.

From a modern perspective you could say they created art in order to have a relationship with spirit so they could manifest the results they wanted.

This is actually the premise of Soul Art. It is the process of creating art as a tool to connect and communicate with spirit in order to live the life you want.

So why not put these Tribal Manifesting Tricks to work for you right now!

Here are the clear steps….

1. Be clear about what you want. If you are going to ask for something you need to know clearly what that is. For example, when they were creating the rain dance, they knew they wanted rain.

2. Do something creative. Once you’ve clarified what you want, stir your energy up by doing something creative. Make something that expresses what you want, dance with the energy of what you want.

3. Be open to receive guidance from spirit.

Enjoy!

Pasquale Marco Veltri~ a photographer who got me dancing!

Many artists and photographers have attempted to capture dancing in a still image.  Some go for the alignment of a pose and others emphasize the physique of the dancer. When I was seeking out photographers to include in ‘The Photographer’s Series’ I wanted to find photographers who were exploring new and innovative ways of capturing images.

When I first connected with photographer Pasquale ‘Marco’ Veltri he told me he wanted to capture the essence of movement using a new technique he called ‘blurry images’.

Curious about how he would do this, I volunteered to dance for one of his photoshoots.

Here is the result of our photoshoot…

As Marco got me dancing he snapped away and even got the camera dancing too.  He wanted to find out what would happen if both the dancer and the camera were moving.  The whole thing felt like a grand experiment.

I learned first hand that Marco’s true nature is a creative explorer. He diligently seeks interesting and innovative ways to capture a visual image so  it can communicate a conceptual idea or creative narrative.

When I did see the final results from our photoshoot I was surprised at the beauty and energy  he was able to capture.  There is an abstract quality that illustrates the energy of dancing.  It feels like the dancer and the dancing are one~ poetry in motion!

It made sense when I found out the Marco is also a filmmaker and recently one of his short films was screened at Cannes Film Festival.  He is definitely a creative talent on the move.

my dark side

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

To feel balanced and whole I exercise my dark side. I know this is unconventional, but I think it is healthy to let your darkness vent.

3 things I like to do to keep myself balanced

1.  Complain

2. Notice what I don’t like

3. Make an ugly face in the mirror

The value I experience from this…

1.Clear’s the system

2.Highlights the true desire

3. Opens space for humour
